Magnificent Morocco – 3. Gibraltar’s rock and residents

I guess the Mediterranean is tumultuous in several different ways.   The sea can be rough, friends of mine witnessed a tragic fatal drowning in Tel Aviv in Israel, and the bible tells us of how rough the sea was when Paul crashed him boat off the coast of Malta.   As well as wars in Israel and Egypt, there was the war in Cyprus in 1974 when half of it was taken over by Turkey.   So I guess Gibraltar’s rock lets you see what goes in and out of the Mediterranean, a pretty unbeatable place for a military base.

This is a tiny place.

DSCF8028 1024Gib (common nick name by local people) feels like a pleasant British town with red telephone boxes, Pounds sterling (with its own slightly different coins) although people driving on the right with British style plates starting with ‘G…..’   They have their own telephone provider, so I decided not to turn on data on my smart phone, which meant looking on maps was a bit tricky. There probably isn’t much crime in Gibraltar but also I wonder if the police seem a bit harsh!

The Youth hostel I stayed it is clean and functional, dingy and somewhat dull and not much more I can say about it.   I only saw one other visitor as it seemed fairly dead.   It’s the only hostel there and I’m sure most people are only there for just the one night.    Interesting booze shopenough, there was an African chap who was running the reception called Idris, the same name as a early figure in Morocco’s history.

This picture I saw in a window of a Jewish owned shop shows pleasant relations with different faith systems there.

It seems much of the shopping in Gibraltar is aimed at British mostly cigarettes and alcohol available tax free.  There’s a few nice gift shops as well, as restaurants offering a lot of British style food.    I was exploring around until quite late, so by the time I went to find somewhere for dinner it was 10pm and most places were closed, so I went to the local pizza hut.

Although it was a Sunday I planned to climb up to the top of the rock that morning, I saw a few sign posts for some Evangelical and Catholic churches there.   Many of the Jews here are of Moroccan descent.   The Jewish community of Gibraltar is quite interesting.   There are about 600 of them, and I saw signs around the city that they were all prepared for the coming (Purim) holidays.  I actually saw some Orthodox people coming out of a synagogue which I asked them for directions to my youth hostel.

Here’s some other well known residents who live here, the Macaques are the only apes that live in Europe, they live on top of the rock but do sometimes get nosy and explore around the town.   There’s a £4000 (!) fine if you are caught feeding them, as they are only meant to eat plain fruit and vegetables.

You can clearly see Gibraltar airport runway strip which is part of the border crossing to get in here from Spain.   I think this highest pinnacle isn’t reachable by anyone, would make a great place to do climbing though

Getting down from the rock is made simple with a Swiss style cable car for a £6.75 ticket.

I didn’t get to travel to the bottom coast of Gib as it was time to start to book my ferry.   Contrary to what I had read, to get the boat across to Tangier, actually required getting a bus a short distance to Algeciras (pretty sure thats an Arabic name too) in Spain, which I could jump on the boat just as it was starting to get dark.

Magnificent Morocco – 2. Spain, the bottom of Europe and the rock of Gibraltar

My flight is booked to Malaga Spain, it seemed close on a map when I started figuring this out.

Actually, its about 3 hours on a bus away, ok this was a bad idea.   Once I got to Malaga, the people in the airport didn’t know how to guide me down, it was a case of get to Marbella first, and get another bus from there.   So that’s what I did.   I was a bit bemused why the ‘L’ in Marbella is silent, it sounds more like Marbaya when pronounced by the locals.    I wasn’t offered Spanish at school!!

DSCF8018I got to this city called La Linea De la Concepcion, not actually to Gibraltar.    This is a slightly odd corner of Europe.   Apparently relations between Gibraltar in Spain haven’t always been good some how, not sure why, I thought this was the EU not the middle east!!   The bus drops me about 200 yards in front of the border crossing.

There is a large checkpoint to get through which seems a bit odd.   I guess because its a significant place for military, as its part of the entry for vessels to the Mediterranean.

I’ve always liked little countries.   This was true since I’ve been to Monaco, and keen on visiting Andorra and San Marino one day.   I visited the Monte Carlo, Monaco in 2005 which managed to pack in an amazing royal palace, marina, several casinos and a tennis court, oh, and a few times a year they close the roads and use the whole tiny state it as a race track.

Gibraltar’s name is actually derived from Arabic, Jabal Tarik, Jabal being mountain in Arabic, its then been ‘Spanish-ised’ to give its well known name,

Going through the border was simple, British policeman were happy with my just waving my passport to get through.  Once through you realise there is a airport and a runway which transverses across the whole of the connecting part of the country.   This must be the only country in the world that has this.

Leonard Nimoy quotes the most famous Jew who ever lived

When the late Star Trek actor passed away a few weeks ago, I looked at some recent comments he made on twitter.   One that caught my eye was this:-

spock tweet

Nimoy was an Orthodox Jew and to the best of my knowledge wasn’t a believer in Jesus, but I thought it was touching he would refer to a passage Jesus used on the sermon on the mount.

Matthew 5 : 1 Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2 and he began to teach them.

The Beatitudes
He said:

3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

I remember a while back, he revealed the Vulcan hand gesture with fingers 1&2 and 3&4 together but seperated in the middle was based on a Jewish Rabbinic thing.

Magnificent Morocco trip – part 1

u2

Do have a watch of this – its a great song and video

A few years ago I was watching a music video by U2 of the song Magnificent.

It caught my eye that this was filmed in what looked like a middle eastern city, the floors, carpets, mosaics and ancient buildings looked attractive, so when I researched where it was, it turns out it was done in Fez Morocco.

Whilst out in the ministry field, I learned that some of my Israeli friends had Moroccan background, several of them also speak Arabic in addition to Hebrew.   Some had used France as a stepping stone before coming to Israel, as they had migrated twice, deeming France not a satisfying place to settle.

Looking on the news there is horrendous antisemitism in Europe, specifically France in recent years.   I’ve read there are some countries that used to have Jews such as Iraq, Iran and Yemen, which only a tiny handful remain.   In addition to this I was curious to know about Morocco and how other religious groups could live in a community which is predominantly Islamic.

I like cooking.   I think Couscous is underated, and done right it can be more interesting than rice for a meal.   There is lots of good food out of this country, I’m used to a Mediterranean diet and middle eastern cooking too.

The buildings look absolutely phemonal.    I decided I have to visit this country.   Many of the budget airlines go there, but I wondered it would be a bit crazy to get a boat over from Spain and also see Gibraltar….

so here marks my first journey to the African continent…..

Dog returns to its vomit

I’ve always wondered what it means in the bible about a dog returning to its vomit.   Proverbs 26 : 11

I’m guessing its to do with patterns of sin we often fall into.

In the last year I’ve seen actors and pop stars find the Lord, but later they get back into the drugs and a previous lifestyle only later.   Some Christians have some kind of background in new age before they are saved, and I worry when later they think it won’t hurt try Reiki (founded in Bhuddism) or hypnotism or reflexology (not recognised by mainstream medicine)

This blog article seems to cover this very well:-

Why Christians should not try and spiritualise secular music

Heard this pop song today whilst listening to the radio in my car this week with lyrics

“I keep going to the river to pray….”

Its a song called ‘Ghost’ by a someone I’ve not heard before called Ella Henderson.

Got me thinking, hmm, is there worship music in the charts these days?

In the past I would a secular pop song on the radio and be excited that had a ambiguous connection to following Jesus. Lets face it, most pop music has lyrics that don’t really make a lot of sense, its too symbolic and metaphorical for anyone to figure out in a simple fashion apart from the band members. I’ve heard one Christian from my home city of Portsmouth describe Bono from U2 as a prophet. Er, I really that is too much of a big award on a very good band that have some Christian background, I can show examples of good and bad lyrics from U2 but that’s for another blog post.

I keep google searchAnyway strangely when I Google searched for this song being curious, I was amazed to see this came up so quickly with only two words I typed!   Must be other people curious about this!

Heres are the lyrics from this track:-

I keep going to the river to pray
‘Cause I need something that can wash all the pain
And at most I’m sleeping all these demons away
But your ghost
The ghost of you, it keeps me awake…

I won’t post any more as to be honest, its a load of rubbish.

In my relationship with Christ, if I sleep through my troubles they get worse, this week I find myself waking up early (5am, sometimes 3am) to pray about something the Lord has put on my heart and stuff not right in my life, as I’ve neglected to find time during the normal hours to spend time with the Lord.   Sleeping anything away isn’t possible.

Washing away the pain can be done only by the blood of Jesus to counter our sins.    I’d ask this artist Ella Henderson do you have to go to the river and pray love? I think maybe if she part of some Indian religion (Hindu?) which the river Ganges is significant for a particular faith.    Really a lot of modern culture wants to take their favourite bits of various religions and meld them into something that someone finds agreeable.

Here’s another song that makes no sense.

“I wish I was a punkrocker with flowers in my hair…” This was a 2005 song I remember but by an artist I also don’t know so well called Sandi Thom (sounds Scandinavian)

Eh?  when did people where flowers in their hair in the punk scene?   Here’s Ms Thom’s Wikipedia page. Er, shes born 1981. So shes not going to remember the punk era.   The punk era started around 1977 spikey hair into a coloured brush type shape, piercings, tshirts and leather jackets which made it peak in pop music with bands like the Sex Pistols, the Ramones, the Clash, the Damned and more.   This rebellious new wave in pop culture was as radical in its attitude as well as in its fast tempo and loudness.   But wearing flowers in your hair is probably apt to the Mommas and Papas song from 1967.

If I’m honest, I probably only have 10 Christian CDs out of 250, I’ve not got into a lot of Christian music, as my music diet has been stuff I heard on radio, TV and through friends over the years.

What a I trying to say?  If someone knows Christ then they will sing or proclaim him without any ambiguity.    Jesus was straight forward in his sacrifice for us, so we don’t need to be too symbolic in proclaiming him either.

War, spiritual attack and fallouts between believers

Currently watching war unfold between Israel and Gaza.   Make no mistake, the clear danger here is Hamas, the political ruler and Islamic terror group that control the Gaza strip.   Innocent people are going to be tragically get caught up on both sides here.  I am praying that Israel can do what’s needed to completely disable Hamas terror group and stop sources of deadly weapons which have potential to threaten about 3/4s of the whole of Israel, as well place Palestinian people in danger of being killed as terrorist infrastructure tends to be built next to schools, mosques and hospitals in Gaza, which is just twice the size of the Isle of WIght but with 1.5 million people.

These days I live and work in London, and I’m trying to catch up with contacting some of my friends and colleagues I worked and got to know in Israel with Skype, seems people are coping well with unstable situation and uncertainty, although Israel has faced wars and threats including its modern day formation in 1948, The Six day War and Yom Kippur War in 1967 and 1973 respectively, as well intafadas and terrorism that have caused many sources of tragedy that have happened as well.

Now due to various different fake peace plans it seems a ground invasion is about to happen.

I’m looking for a church here near my new home in London, I’ve got to know several different circles of Messianic Jews, in fact I also see many different small niche churches and home churches of believers for a particular nationality, last weekend I was looking for a friends church, but even with using Google Maps on my phone, I couldn’t find my friend’s church so I spoke to some people in the street who were going to a completely different church which was made of people from Zimbabwe, a country I don’t really know much about apart from they have many troubles there.

In addition to groups of Messianic believers I’ve met in Israel and UK, here in London I’ve seen a church at the background of a Chinese restaurant for Chinese believers in London, Persian church with evening services for Armenians, Japanese people doing a special service borrowing a normal Anglican church.   I found this really exciting as we see Christians in London able to reach out to their own brothers and sisters of the same ethnicity without feeling like they are losing their identity.

I’ve still yet to exactly decide on a regular congregation to go to on a Sunday, but I need to soon as I miss not having a cell group and want to make some new friends soon.   These smaller congregations are great, but I’d like to find a church that’s suitable for young single professionals like me, with good teaching, worship and fellowship.

Something I find that troubles me is people I know in Israel and UK, Jewish and Gentile believers who are involved with ministry projects, are under a different type of threats.  I’m seeing spiritual attack in last month or so, in terms of IT equipment failure of large ministry friends of mine work for, and believers getting into disunity with each other, its sad when brothers and sisters in the Lord have fall outs it makes it awkward for those who are mutual friends of those involved.    One of these circumstances happened purely out of asking two friends to meet up for beer, not realising something happened between them, resulting in me being shunned.

The blogging world can be great, to share whats going on with how someone is serving the Lord or reporting on whats happening to a particular group of believers in particular area of ministry.    Something I have seen is often when reporting on false teachers and those promoting a false gospel, is that you can end up spending too much on these things, and can end up missing out in your spiritual life.

I’ve done reporting on such things in the past, I really right now want to seek to understand and learn how spiritual gifts are, and wondered if I have wasted time as a believer than I could of spent better.

Despite several bad things that happened that obviously have been an attack of the enemy (not that’s an excuse for the way we may battle with each other)  I’ve been really blessed by my new job in London, and the Lord has provided many new exciting opportunities have happened, I’ve also seen exciting projects come to fruition by friends reaching out to those in need that really inspire me.   It is at times like this that enemy wants to plant strife and dischord.

Continue to pray for the peace of Jerusalem, and protection on those you know who are in Israel or are involved with projects for Jewish or Arab people.

Why praying for Israel is different anywhere else

To many Christians, taking an interest in Israel and Jewish people may seem just another type of niche type of ministry project no different from any other.

My friend Justin who was volunteering on the staff of the church I was at in Jerusalem for 4 years mentions this:-

“Now Justin aren’t you being a little narrow in focusing so much on Israel and the Jewish people?

Here is why I am not, we are commanded and called specifically to pray for the peace of Jerusalem and Israel, and the Jewish people, throughout the Bible The Holy Scriptures in countless passages.

Why? Because that is GOD’S Land, and they are GOD’S original people, whom HE called and whom HE has chosen, through whom we also have received the preserved Word of GOD, our faith, and ultimately the MESSIAH through their lineage and geneology.

Therefore when you pray for Israel you are not only praying for Israel, but for the world, because when you support your forefathers in the faith, and when you support GOD’S people, that translates to favor, and blessing upon you and the world, and the preservation of things. But when you neglect and abuse, you fail to support and oppose GOD’S People, if you could care less and don’t recognize GOD’S People it will be a curse, and a judgment upon the world.

So a prayer for Israel and a prayer for GOD’S People is a prayer for the world and its preservation and salvation. Furthermore with that in mind we as Christian believers I wholeheartedly believe are an extension of Israel by adoption, and one with the true believers of Israel that ultimately will accept and embrace JESUS CHRIST as their LORD and SAVIOR as well, through the connection and union of ourselves with THE MOSHIACH THE JEWISH MESSIAH CHRIST JESUS.

There are various scriptures which reference this and give light to it. That is why I emphasized prayer for the Christian Church specifically at this time as well. Then of course I referenced prayer for the lost and unbelieving in JESUS CHRIST as well, that they too would repent of their sins, and be saved by inviting JESUS into their hearts and lives to be their LORD and SAVIOR to fill them with HIS HOLY SPIRIT, and delivered from the impending tribulation judgment that could take place very soon by the looks of things in the world, and the end times events that very well could be preparing to be unleashed in the very near future.”

Jesus was in Hell between death and resurrection? Hell no.

I read recently from a few Christians who have this alarming idea that Jesus was in Hell between his death and resurrection.

Today I decided to do some research of how people come to this conclusion.

I read this site today:- http://www.gotquestions.org/did-Jesus-go-to-hell.html

Seem a lot of this error boils down to mistranslation in this passage here:-

Psalm 16 : 10
American Standard Version
For thou wilt not leave my soul to Sheol; Neither wilt thou suffer thy holy one to see corruption.

Douay-Rheims Bible
Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; nor wilt then give thy holy one to see corruption.

Darby Bible Translation
For thou wilt not leave my soul to Sheol, neither wilt thou allow thy Holy One to see corruption.

English Revised Version
For thou wilt not leave my soul to Sheol; neither wilt thou suffer thine holy one to see corruption.

Webster’s Bible Translation
For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thy Holy One to see corruption.

World English Bible
For you will not leave my soul in Sheol, neither will you allow your holy one to see corruption.

Young’s Literal Translation
For Thou dost not leave my soul to Sheol, Nor givest thy saintly one to see corruption.

King James
For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

New International version
because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, nor will you let your faithful one see decay.

Its interesting how in this case that the NIV is better than the KJV here!

sheol

From the scant bit of Hebrew learning I did, I remember that Nefesh is soul and Sheoul is the word for ‘Hades’

I looked this up n Hebrew wikipedia, which originally just copying שאול shows a listing for Shaul of Tarsius.  A bit more searching found this article http://he.wikipedia.org/wiki/ שאול_(מיתולוגיה)  which you can easily read in Google translator or the Chrome browser, bit didn’t tell me anything that useful.    But its fascinating that God’s decision to rename Shaul to Paul considering his transformation from a well educated Jewish Roman tent maker but someone who was a murderer and against the gospel to one who was the most well known missionary and author of the largest amount of the New Testament.

As a kid, I remember reading somewhere that our death and judgement is like going through a large airport security area where you then are evaluated whether you have a passport, ticket, boarding card and luggage are acceptable to the airline and jurisdiction of the country you are travelling to, but with the only requirement is being a follower of Christ and therefore in the big salvation database of every human who ever lived, the Lamb’s book of life.

Further on, it seems in Revelation, Hell and Hades are described as two different places.

Revelation 20:11–15
11 Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. The earth and the heavens fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. 13 The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what they had done. 14 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. 15 Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.

Here its interesting it describes ‘the second death’ here.  Hell isn’t mentioned in Revelation in my NIV, but it does mention the lake of fire.

My conclusion is Jesus didn’t go to hell for the 3 days he was not on earth, but actually visited the inbetween place Shaul or Hades, to set up the process of how people are judged if they are fit for eternal life.   Jesus’s friends didn’t immediately recognise him as he would of had a shave, shower, hair cut and looked much better then when he was arrested I think.

This just makes me more conscious of how I need to live and to repent of the regular bad things I constantly fall into.
